Weight Loss Medications
Medical Weight Loss Florham Park, NJ
Most of us have a few extra pounds to lose but there’s no quick fix for long-term weight loss. It takes dedication, clinically proven methods, and ongoing support. At Dr. Li Wellness in Florham Park, New Jersey, Dr. Sherry Li is trained in obesity medicine and can help identify a medical weight loss approach that is best for you.
If you’re having trouble sticking to your plan because you’re hungry or you just can’t seem to lose those last few pounds no matter how much you diet and exercise, Dr. Li might recommend a prescription weight loss medication for you.
In general, weight loss medications are appropriate for those with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or for those with a BMI of 27 and risk factors such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
There are several FDA-approved weight loss medications on the market today, including Xenical®, Belviq®, Saxenda®, Contrave®, Phentermine® (often for appetite control), and Qsymia®, all of which have been clinically proven to reduce body weight by at least 5% over the course of a year. While this might not sound impressive, consider that losing just 5% of your body weight can reduce your risk of diabetes by 50%! It can also lower your cholesterol and blood pressure.
All of these medications except Xenical act on the hypothalamus to decrease appetite and increase feelings of fullness after eating. Xenical prevents your body from absorbing as much as 30% of the fat you eat, and you must follow a low-fat diet while taking it. As long as you take these medications under physician supervision, they are safe for long-term use.
Dr. Li will let you know if prescription weight loss medication is right for you and discuss the risks and benefits with you. She will monitor your progress and adjust your medication as necessary. Weight loss medications are most effective when used as a part of a comprehensive program that involves a low-calorie diet, exercise regimen, and behavior modification.
